Butterfly Moss is an extremely rare moss worldwide with rounded shape leaves, The Butterfly Moss that Aquarzon grows is 100% true Butterfly Moss. When we first propagated it, we started off with just a few inches and had to slowly grow it over a year to be able to have enough to offer to our customers. The original specimen we had was first obtained from a highly experienced hobbyist in Australia.

This moss is very beautiful and one of a kind with its very rounded leaves. As per Aquarzon's long-term observation, a unique feature of this moss is its distinctive rhizoids (moss roots) which causes it to have brown furry spots along its strands. This is important to know as it can be easily confused to be BBA or brown algae which is not. In our experience, this moss will grow more rhizoids if there are strands that are floating or have not yet attached to an object.

Because of the pronounced rhizoids of the Butterfly Moss, this moss can form exceptionally good grip on rocks and wood, which makes it a very good midground moss. It forms a much stronger grip compared to most mosses including many Taxiphyllum and Vesicularia species mosses. Besides being a great midground moss, it can also used as a foreground moss as it has a creeping growth habit so it can be used to creep across the substrate. It is one of the very few mosses that can creep on the substrate very well without floating away easily.
