Pogostemon Helferi 'Downoi' is a beautiful, compact-growing foreground plant with unique star-shaped leaves. This small foreground plant was originally discovered in Thailand and is now a popular foreground aquarium plant worldwide.
Aquarzon recommends at least medium lighting, sufficient nutrients, especially iron and good water flow for this plant. Nutrients can be provided using aquarium substrate and/or liquid fertilisers. If the aquarium substrate is older than a year, root tabs can be used.
In a high tech tank, this plant can grow side shoots at a decently fast rate which over time can turn into a gorgeous star leaves-shape carpet.
In a low tech tank, this plant will grow slowly but it can still form a beautiful low-growing gorgeous bush over time.
Aquarzon finds that there is conflicting information on whether this plant can be grown in a low tech tank. In our experience, this plant can definitely melt is conditions are not right or adequate in a low tech tank. But it can be certainly grown in low tech tank if their requirements are met. As mentioned above, this plants needs at least medium lighting (high lighting preferred), sufficient nutrients, especially iron and good water flow. There is still some chance this plant can melt in a low tech tank but there are also many hobbyists with low tech tanks who have successfully grown this.
The Pogostemon Helferi listed here is aquarium submersed grown. This helps the transitioning process and helps avoid/reduces risk of melting.
