Ginga Rubra are very beautiful livebearing fishes with males having the unique feature of having 3-5 red bars on their blond bodies. Under certain angles, pink colouration is reflected from the surrounding of the red bars. Males develop stunning these colours while females develop a nice, solid golden blond body

Ginga Rubra is a relatively newer and less common strain available locally compared to other livebearers in general. It is understood that Ginga Rubra originated from Kenjiro Tanaka in Japan, who have more than 30 years of experience in selective breeding. There are various sources that mentioned that Ginga Rubra fishes are either Poecilia Reticulata (guppies) or Poecilia Reticulata x Poecilia Wingei (guppy cross Endlers Livebearer hybirds).

They are very active fishes that love checking out plants and almost all corners of the aquarium tank. In our aquarium, they love swimming between mosses and even very small gaps between plants.

This strain is recommended for hobbyists who love colourful but not too fancy, striped, active and smaller fishes which are easy to keep and breed, yet at the same time not common. It is not sold in general local aquarium shops. Unlike guppies with long, fancy tails, these fishes have relatively short tails are is therefore not prone to fin rot or fin nibbling issues. We have not seen any fin nibbling or fin rot issues with these fishes so far.

In our experience, these fishes very rarely consume their fry unless they are very hungry or when there is too little safe cover for newborn fry in the aquarium tank. In our aquarium, our newborn fry usually stay at the base of their tank under the mosses when they are born. After a few days, they rise to the top, again protected by mosses or tall stem plants that reach the surface of the water. During that time, they can eat small powdered food. After 1-2 weeks, they will be brave enough to swim in the main water column and the adults usually do not disturb them.

Our Ginga Rubra was originally acquired from a top breeder in Australia in 2017 when they were around $60 per pair.  All Aquarzon's guppies and Endler livebearer originate from the some of the top breeders in Australia that breed quality fishes. Guppies and Endlers bred by Aquarzon are fed with freeze-dried blackworms and Hikari/Nutrafin daily. There have been no known diseases encountered with these fishes.
