Aquarzon recommends this unique rhizome plant as a special feature background plant in an aquascape.

If you like Anubias, this plant will highly likely be an excellent favourite as it is so much like Anubias but with more unique leaves.

Based on Aquarzon's observations, this unique plant has green elliptical leaves that feel leathery when touched. Its leaves have a unique ribbed pattern. Its petiole (the part connecting the rhizome to the leaf) is usually reddish.

Furtadoa Sumatrensis is one of the only two species of Furtadoa and it is endemic to Sumatra in Indonesia. The genus was described in 1981 by Mitsuru Hotta, a Japanese botanist who specialises in Araceae.

It is a very rare and unique plant that can be cared and grown just like an Anubias. It can be grown submersed or emersed, depending on preference.

From our experience, when grown under low to medium lighting level, the leaves are usually darker green. When grown in higher lighting intensity, its leaves can be brighter green to golden colour.

We are currently growing most under higher lighting intensity so it may have a more golden tone.

Furtadoa Sumatrensis is the ideal unique midground to background feature and highlight plant for almost any aquascapes including natural rainforest / jungle theme aquascapes.

This plant is very highly recommended as a very rare centrepiece feature plant that can be the highlight of an aquascape.

Aquarzon’s photo below displays the colour tone of this plant’s unique red petiole. The petiole is the ‘stem’ part which connects the leaf to the rhizome.

The fish on and near the petiole are Super Red Bristlenose. In comparison to the Super Red Bristlenose, the Furtadoa Sumatrensis Red has a less intense red colour tone, but still stunning enough to create a visual impact in a planted tank aquascape. It can contrast very well against green foliage (in this photo, the contrasting effect against the green moss can be seen.
