Subwassertang actual name is actually Süsswassertang which is the german word for 'Freshwater Seaweed'. It was known as 'Freshwater Seaweed' as its pattern resembles the pattern of seaweed while being a fully freshwater plant.

It is a very easy low tech plant which is good when using it as a clump at the base of an aquarium including when used to create a 'seaweed' style carpet foreground bed. Aquarzon also recommends it to positioned in gaps (such as crevices or holes between rocks and driftwood) or along the base parameter area of structures such as logs and rocks which can create a nice aquascaping effect. It is an good gap filling plant.

Aquarzon advises that when keeping this plant, it is strongly recommended not to use Seachem Excel, glutheraldehyde or similar, Hydrogen Peroxide, algaecide, etc. as it can damage the plant. Aside from that, it is a super easy plant.

This plant is popularly used by shrimp keepers and fish breeders as it can offer shrimplets and fish fry protection from larger fishes. The biofilm and infusoria that naturally grows on it also offer shrimps a natural food source.

Subwassertang used to be thought as being a liverwort but it is actually a Lomariopsis that is a prothallium or gametophyte of a fern.
